  • East Fork Falls (photo by John Cochran)

Nestled within the boundaries of Transylvania County can be found more than 250 natural waterfalls of all shapes, sizes, and configurations. Many of the falls are readily accessible to all, being visible from roadside pulloffs or via a short walk along an easy path. Others, however, are deeper in the woodlands and are accessible only by a hiking trail or by boat.

    Misty Images

The natural beauty of the falls is complemented by their many colorful names. Aside from the very popular Looking Glass Falls (pictured on the Homepage) which is 50 feet wide and 60 feet high and easily viewed from Highway 276 in Pisgah National Forest, just a few of the other falls include

    Rainbow Falls
    150 feet high
    Raven Falls
    75 feet high
    Slippery Witch Falls
    100 feet high
    White Owl Falls
    20 feet high
    Twin Falls
    100 feet high
    Whitewater Falls
    411 feet high
    (Highest in eastern US)
(All six photos by Curtis Krumel. Check his site for more photos and additional info on the waterfalls pictured here.)

    Taking the Slide

    Fun at Sliding Rock

While the obvious beauty of the many falls is not to be missed, most visitors to Transylvania County consider Sliding Rock a must on their list of stops. Whether it be as a participant or spectator, this 150 foot natural water slide is not to be missed. Approximately 11,000 gallons per minute of cool (50 to 60 degree) mountain stream water propel sliders across the smooth rock base of the falls. The fun of sliding down the watery rock face is rivaled only by watching (and occasionally laughing at) those making the slide!

Sliding Rock is located just off Highway 276 inside Pisgah National Forest. There is a nominal $3 per car admission fee to the falls area, and bathhouses are available for changing into suitable attire for enjoying the slide.
